EXCLUSIVE NEWS: MISTY BEETHOVEN PRINT FOUND FOR SCREENING!!!

IMG_1554

The screening of  the restored version of The Opening of Misty Beethoven, which is set for tomorrow night at Anthology Film Archives at 9:30pm, will now be an actual screening of a 35 mm print, which is in wonderful condition. The majority of film fans would much rather view a print as opposed to a DVD or BLU RAY, especially in a theater experience/setting. As a matter of fact, I know many who would prefer a beat up print, over a DVD, when it comes to any screening. It is going to be an amazing experience. We are hoping that this last minute news will be more than a surprise and I hope that it brings out a few more.

I will be on hand to introduce the film, along with Process Blue’s Joe Rubin. Joe’s company Process Blue performed the 2 k scan and digital restoration for the entire project. While we will keep our dialog short, we will be there all night long, so please feel free to come over to us and ask any questions or introduce yourself.

Also, we will have limited quantities at discounted pricing of the following:

DVD/BLU RAY/CD SOUNDTRACKS/POSTERS  of THE OPENING OF MISTY BEETHOVEN

I hope to see you all tomorrow night!

MISTY BEETHOVEN-KICKSTARTER UPDATE

Posted in Current News, PRESS RELEASES with tags , , , , on June 5, 2012 by distribpix

We have some bad news, but the community support and enthusiasm for this project is too big for one speed-bump to stop.

Despite the film’s historical importance, its artistic merit, and all of our hard work on the film, extras and campaign, Kickstarter has decided that Misty is too sexy for the site and is in the process of terminating the campaign. Your credit cards will not be charged.

IMPORTANT: If you would like to continue to support this project outside of Kickstarter, please e-mail your pledge level to Steven@VideoXPix.com as we’re unsure if we’ll be able to preserve your information from within Kickstarter itself.

Obviously, we’re unhappy about this turn of events. We can name 4 or 5 projects with with similar content which have been allowed to progress to completion. We are filing an appeal of their ruling (and any polite, professional e-mails you can sent to KS in our support emphasizing the artistic nature of this film and the integrity of the project would be GREATLY appreciated), but odds are that the project will NOT be re-listed.

We sill love Kickstarter, but clearly they feel uncomfortable working with us. So we’re hard at work figuring out how to re-launch this project on our own. The silver lining in this dark cloud? Since Kickstarter won’t be taking their percentage off the top, we’re going to try to work out how to turn that extra margin into even better rewards for you.

We will keep you posted when we have details! We’re going to come out of this stronger and better and we hope that you’ll be right there with us. This Misty release is going to be one for the history books!

With tremendous gratitude,
Steven, Ian, and the 435 Crew

THE HENRY PARIS TRIPLE FEATURE

Posted in DISTRIBPIX, PRESS RELEASES with tags , , , , , , on March 10, 2012 by distribpix

The Henry Paris Triple Feature

3 of the greatest X-rated features, from the maestro of erotic cinema, Radley Metzger, all for one low price. This is a great opportunity to own all 3 of these HENRY PARIS films, remastered from the original negatives, with a host of extras on each disc.
Radley Metzger’s entire life has been dedicated to cinema. From a child in the theaters of NYC, to being an assistant at RKO studios on Park Ave, to becoming one of the most well known directors of all time. His impressive tenure as an extremely successful director, distributor and businessman, speaks for itself.
In the early 1970′s after coming off the European set of “The Score”, Radley made his way back to NYC, and soon realized that a hairdresser from Queens, named Gerard Damiano, had made a little stag film called “Deepthroat”! He took notice and saw what was happening around him, he felt a movement and that movement was porno-chic. He figured, he was already a very successful filmmaker, so if a hair dresser can do it, then he certainly had a decent shot. He created the moniker “Henry Paris”, as to keep his identity in the dark, as he had a well known reputation.
In 1974, he assembled a very professional cast and crew and in six days he was able to create the “Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann”. It was a hit, and Radley Metzger had now become master of the soft and the hard. Henry Paris went on to make “Naked Came The Stranger in 1975, based on the novel by the same name. This film’s budget was much greater than Pamela and involved more cast and crew. “Naked” premiered at the WORLD THEATER in NYC and was an instant hit. He went on to make 2 more very successful films: The Opening of Misty Beethoven and Barbara Broadcast. The first is referred to by some as the greatest adult film ever made. In 1978, Metzger released the swan song to the genre in ” Maraschino Cherry”, a combination of several scenes from various shoots and original footage.
This is a great deal and a great opportunity to get all 3 Henry Paris classics for one low price.
INCLUDED: •Maraschino Cherry Platinum Elite 2 Disc Set •The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann 2 Disc Set •Naked Came The Stranger Special Edition

Naked Came The Hoax…..A Brief History

Posted in Current News, DISTRIBPIX with tags , , , , , , , , on January 16, 2012 by distribpix

“Naked Came the Stranger,” Penelope Ashe’s torrid novel of adultery and revenge, exploded onto the literary scene in the summer of 1969. Ashe, a “demure Long Island housewife,” regaled every television and radio show host who would listen to her with tales of how she brought the sultry page-turner to life.

The literary establishment was scandalized, both by the explicit and pervasive sexual content and by the poor quality of the writing itself. The book-buying public didn’t care. “Naked” shot to the top of the bestseller lists, blazing through its initial run of hardcovers in a matter of weeks.

Then on September 1, 1969, the David Frost Show introduced its guest for the evening, “Penelope Ashe.” As the orchestra struck up a rousing rendition of “A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody,” nineteen men filed onto stage, single file. The hoax was revealed and a media firestorm ensued.

“Penelope Ashe” did not exist. Hoax-ringleader Mike McGrady’s sister-in-law played the role for the press and a cadre of 24 Newsday writers (19 men and 5 women) had written the book. Each had provided a chapter without any knowledge of what the others had written, under strict orders to avoid character development, plot advancement, and quality writing at all costs. Chapters deemed too high in quality were rewritten. A two sex-scene minimum per chapter was rigidly enforced.

McGrady, incensed that poorly-written sex novels like “Valley of the Dolls” topped the bestseller lists while talented writers languished in obscurity, had set out to prove a point. Choose a sexy title, slap a naked woman onto the front cover, fill the pages with explicit sex, and the novel would sell. Any novel. Even if the writing was terrible, the plot non-existent, and the style a mishmash of two dozen different authors. He made his point in spectacular fashion.

When Radley Metzger brought the story to the screen half a decade later, he kept the title, the character names, the episodic structure, and the basic plot. But he jettisoned the hackneyed dialogue and poorly-written encounters, replacing them with his trademark clever staging and sparkling wit.

It was now the Newsday writers’ turn to be shocked. Metzger invited them to the premiere, and many took up his invitiation, bringing along their wives, blissfully unaware that they were about to watch a hardcore film full of unsimulated sex. “I donít know what they were expecting,” Radley shrugged, “the theater where it played was the most prestigious house of porn in America.”

Nevertheless, the movie was a hit, dethroning “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” to top the New York box office. Radley rode the wave of success to bankroll his next film, the ambitious and remarkable “The Opening of Misty Beethoven.”

For all the sordid details of the “Naked Came the Stranger” hoax, quotes from the participants, the backstory of Radley’s adaptation, and more, check out film historian Benson Hurst’s incredible writeup in the DVD’s 40-page liner notes booklet.

A couple more comparison shots, between the Standard Def release by VCA and the Distribpix HD transfer:

In the first shot we see Eric Edwards, who plays a private detective or “peeping tom” named Frank. He is in the office of Mr. Mann, getting the lowdown on his wife, Pamela.

In the second shot, we see Levi Richards, bragging to a friend, about his conquest and transformation of Georgie(Georgina Spelvin), but the joke is on him!!

It really is amazing what a decent transfer and some color correction can do. It is not the best source material we have ever used and there are some very minor, negative defects, but overall, it is a tremendous looking film transfer. The colors have come back to life, literally making some scenes from the old version, look black and white, it was that washed.  There is also more information from more of the frame being scanned and that is always nice to see. The skin tones have also come back and are much more realistic than on the old version. The film is much more enjoyable to watch and the fact that it is now UNCUT, makes it even more so. It is now back in the context, in which it was originally shot, and real fan’s of Henry Paris, will get to see this film in it’s entirety. The scene in question, where Darby and Jamie, abduct Pamela from the park is so vital to the context of the film, at least I think so. For me, it makes much more sense. Anyway, enjoy these shots.
